Every mother of a new baby wants to breastfeed. There are so many advantages: it is natural and good for both baby and mother. It's easy to take your baby along and feed on demand whenever you go, to friends, to church, on holiday or to the park. You know that you are giving your baby the best possible start in life when you breast feed. You also join the ranks of all the women through the ages and in countries all over the world who have breast fed their babies.

I had my daughter at the grand old age of 37, and was delighted to be able to breastfeed her. The sensation of feeding her was like nothing else I can imagine - sensual and satisfying at the same time. Breast feeding promotes bonding with your baby too. It also encourages you to slow down your life, and go at the pace of your baby. I spent many happy hours feeding both my children.

I breast fed both my children and, yes, there were times when it was embarrassing, such as when my engorged breasts started leaking down the front of my Tee shirt one summer's day, but I have no regrets. When out and about in public places, I breast fed using a shawl to cover the baby discretely in many places where no-one noticed at all. After all, it is the most natural thing in the world, and we should be proud of our ability to give our babies the best possible start in life.

My daughter fed for so long that by the age of two she was asking for a 'feediyou'. I used to say 'Shall I feed you?' and that was her version of it! She used to say 'this side' too, copying me. She fed until she was two and a half, and didn't really want to stop. By then, I was expecting my son, at the age of forty, and had to wean her.

My son, by comparison, one day made it quite plain as a ten month old baby that he had had enough. To my amazement, he simply put his little hand in a stop position, and I knew that he meant 'That's it, mum, no more breast feeds for me, thanks'.

My two children are now grown up, and things have changed so much. So many mothers have to work, and many choose to keep breastfeeding as well. Breast feeding pumps of every type and style are available, so that mothers can express their milk and baby can still be fed while mum is independent for some hours of the day. In this way, they can have the best of both worlds, while still providing for their baby. And dad and other members of the family can be involved with the feeding too! Mothers can have a much-needed break.

One of the bestselling breast pumps that mothers love is the Medela Swing Breast Pump.
